2018 Oates Ends Tempranillo
Our Tempranillo is a vibrant, ripe berry fruited wine with loads of fresh strawberry flavour. Harvested from the Tempranillo block Russ planted several years ago to try the new variety, further plantings have occured due to the popularity of this new variety with local winemakers grown in the Margaret River climate and soils. Harvested in the cool of the night to retain maximum fruit aromas and flavours the Tempranillo has a short, warm fermentation followed by pressing to conditioned french oak barriqes for maturation for 9 months to ensure the oak does overwhelm the inherent fruitiness of the variety. Released ready to drink the Tempranillo is a fantastic match for grilled meats, pizza and Italian food.
Best of the West – WA's top Tempranillo.
Ray Jordan - The West Australian Wine Guide 2020. 94/100 “Bursting with ripe red berry evident on the nose and a medium-bodied palate. Notes of rasberry with dried herbs adding aromtaic interest. The palate has a bright raspberry chery character with fine chalky tannins and a subtle hint of oak very much understated. Love the brightness and energy here that is ideal for current drinking or over the next few years.” Cellar 5 years.
Angus Hughson – Wine Pilot. 93 points. “Tempranillo is one of those grapes where winemakers around the country are still searching for the local holy grail – where it will produce the best wines. Canberra, McLaren Vale and the Alpine Valleys are showing plenty of potential and you can now add Margaret River to the mix with this wine from Oates Ends showing flavours similar to the wines from Spain. It is quite deep in colour and shows a delicious mix of spicy strawberry fruits, some spice with a touch of damp earth which is all matched with toasty oak. It is then dry, and fleshy with an acid tang plus power and generous but soft tannins. It is also concentrated and finishes long so will appeal to fans of Tempranillo but also anyone looking for a mid-weight red to match up with something a little meaty, like lamb kofta.” 20/5/2020.
Andrew Graham – The Australian Wine Review. 90 points. “Margaret River Tempranillo from Cath Oates, the ex-Plantagenet winemaker who now makes handy Margaret River wines tapping into fruit from her brother’s vineyard at Wilyabrup. I like Cath and I like her honest, well-priced wines. With this Oates Ends Tempranillo 2018 we’re in joven territory, with a vibrant and juicy style of plump Tempranillo that spends 9 months in older oak, the flavours light to medium bodied with a cavalcade of berries and fine tannins. It’s an easy wine to like with fruit appeal without being facetious. Best drinking: now but in five years it will still be going.” 13/1/2020.
Toni Paterson – therealreview.com. 89 Points. “A beautifully fragrant wine with soft raspberry fruit with a faint sweet-oak overlay. Sour cherry and satsuma plum flavours supported by bright acidity and drying tannin frame. Excellent fruit” Date Tasted 19/5/2019. Drink 2019-2023
