2016 Oates Ends Cabernet Sauvignon

2016 Oates Ends Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon shows typical Margaret River flavours of blackcurrant and dried bay leaf.  The medium body is layered and complex, with oak spice notes following extended ageing over 18 months in french oak barriques and puncheons.  With the structure to reward extended ageing in your cellar it also has the freshness and complexity to provide immediate enjoyment.  Hand harvested from the best Cabernet Sauvignon block at the Wilagri vineyard the fruit is gently destemmed and sorted before being hand plunged for several weeks, followed by a further extended maceration time to polish the tannin structure before oak ageing.  Following barrel selection and blending the wine is bottled without filtration to preserve freshness and fruit.

Andrew Graham – Australian Wine Review. 18.7/20, 95/100. “Cath Oates’ Margaret River wines continue to impress. Ever since the original releases using fruit nabbed from a Treasury contracted block, these wines have shone. And this Oates Ends Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is another shit-hot release.  There is an instant classiness of texture, of tannin, of layers of flavour that I admire, with a lone gripe that the oak is a big player for the moment. But the takeaway remains a powerful, yet perfectly well mannered, clever Margaret River Cab that belongs on the top shelf. Serve it blind alongside Moss Wood and start questioning buying decisions…  Best drinking: nowish, though likely better in five years, to fifteen years easy. Would I buy it? Let’s share a bottle or two with something done over hot coals.” 29/6/2020

Angus Hughson – Wine Pilot. 96 Points “The third release of the Oates Ends Cabernet Sauvignon and potentially the best yet. Made from a single mature Wilyabrup vineyard, it is a bigger, riper and bolder style, backed by plenty of structure that gives the wine approachability plus plenty of tannins to age well. Bright mid to deep ruby, it is immediately powerful and generous with layers of black and red currant fruits, some cedar too plus toasty well matched oak. It is then a dry, full-bodied and dense Cabernet that is juicy and fleshy but also has plenty of very fine tannins. The wine finishes with great length and power plus an overriding sense of great balance. A very serious Margaret River Cab.” Drink 2020-30. 17/5/2020

Ray Jordan - The West Australian Wine Guide 202095 Points. “This was a good vintage in Margaret River, with tannin management the key to the best wines. Cath Oates has done this so well, creating an elegant wine of impecccable balance. Blackcurrant richness with a little bay leaf and oyster shell influence.  Tannins are well integrated, and the oak sits harmoniously within.” Cellar 12 years.

James Halliday - 93 Points. “Is taking its time to settle down and get on with the business of development. When it does, it will be a medium-bodied cabernet, with elegance, balance and cassis its playing cards.”

Huon Hooke – 91 Points. “Medium to deep red colour with a trace of purple in the rim. There are mature toasty and earthy notes in the developed bouquet as well as faint leafy blackcurrant notes. Savoury, mellow and developed, the palate is soft and earthy, savoury dry and developed. Medium-bodied, and nicely proportioned. Date Tasted 9/10/2019. Drink 2019-2032.
