2020 Oates Ends Semillon Sauvignon blanc
The 2020 combines the zesty citrus freshness of Semillon with the exotic passionfruit and guava of Sauvignon blanc. Fermentation and ageing on yeast lees in seasoned oak adds layer of creamy texture to the wine.
This complex style of Semillon Sauvignon blanc will match most foods, particularly those with layered flavours and spices. Although released ready to drink it will reward some long cool cellaring, gaining interesting waxy and lemon rind flavours with age.
Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion. 94 points. “65/35% Semillon/sauvignon blanc. The semillon was wild fermented and pressed to old French barriques (this is where the fresh garden herb characters come in). The sauvignon blanc was fermented in tank to preserve freshness of fruit (passionfruit, guava, white pepper) then left on fermentation lees for 3 months to build texture and creaminess. Concentrated and restrained, the nose has a sweet cardamom, freshly grated nutmeg character.” 4 Jan 2021
Ken Gargett – Wine Pilot. 93 points “This small Margaret River operation is quickly building a reputation for exceptional wines, not a bad feat given the surrounding competition. As with all Oates Ends wines, elegantly packaged. From the Wilyabrup sub-region (subject to some intense scrutiny in respect of a possible, and locally controversial, appellation system), this has incurred some barrel fermentation. The old Sem Sauv Blanc combo was well known as the region’s classic dry white blend, until it was swept away by the Kiwi Sauvalanche. I found a few too many of them to be a bit too grassy to really excite, but this one has no such issues. Tropical just explodes from the glass. Passionfruit galore. A whiff of pineapple. Bold, full-flavoured, this is nicely balanced with good acidity. Seamless and with serious length. Drink it now, for two years. For me, this is one of the best Sem Savvy blends going.” Drink 2020-22 23/11/20
Mike Bennie - The Wine Front. 93 points. "A barrel fermented rendition of the classic. Stylish wine, super delicious. Crisp edges with light creaminess inside, the scents and flavours of tropical fruits, bay leaf, cut grass and white pepper with the faint trill of cashew. Compact and racy to taste, pent up but with good energy, tight finish and refreshment in spades. Elegant SSB here. Very good fruit, very good feel. I suspect will cellar short term well too." 2020-2025
Angus Hughson – Wine Pilot. 93 points “It is almost too much with explosive aromas of passionfruit and guava – like you’d expect from Marlborough. There are also hints of green herbs, lanolin and hay with subtle vanillin French oak also in the mix. Right now it is then dry and angular on the palate with fruit all wound up in a core of biting acidity. The wine is long, tight and pure right now and will make for a refreshing drink this Spring and Summer. But it will be much better given a couple of years when the layers of complex fruit emerge to showcase how good Margaret River white blends in the right hands can be, such as those of leading local winemaker, Cath Oates.” Drink 2022-2026 7/7/2020
